Preventative Dentistry

Preventative Dentistry

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

Parents should introduce preventative dentistry to their children early in life and teach them about the importance of practicing good oral hygiene. Regular dental care will increase a person’s quality of life and lead to a range of health benefits. Not to mention, it’s great practice for adults as well!

Simply put, preventative dentistry is the practice of taking good care of your teeth. This will keep your teeth, gums, and mouth healthy.

Preventative Dentistry includes:

  • Brushing your teeth twice a day (don’t forget to brush your tongue)
  • Flossing Daily
  • Visiting the dentist twice a year
  • Eating a balanced diet (don’t go crazy on sugary foods and drinks)

The benefits of preventative dentistry

Practicing good dental hygiene can greatly reduce your chances of having cavities, gingivitis, periodontitis, and a variety of other dental problems. In turn, practicing good dental hygiene can also prevent you from having illnesses that occur from poor oral health. Some of these illnesses are diabetes, cancer, respiratory disease, heart disease, and osteoporosis.

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, you should prioritize good dental hygiene. Early birth and low birth weight are also linked to poor oral hygiene. Pregnant mothers should visit the dentist routinely.

Preventative dentistry may not completely eliminate the need of future root canals or dental implants, but it definitely aides in the possible prevention of those costly procedures.

Always visit the dentist regularly

Aside from practicing preventative dentistry in your home, you should visit the dentist regularly. Scheduling a cleaning every six months is essential to having good oral hygiene and should always be part of your routine. Even toddlers need to see the dentist, and so do seniors, even if they wear dentures. Dentures do not prevent cavities and gum disease.

Older children can get dental sealant on their new adult teeth. Dental sealants can aid in preventing plaque and other bacteria from forming cavities. Children are susceptible to cavities as they have sensitive teeth and may eat more sugar than adults. Getting sealant for your child can prevent cavities and can save them from having to go through a painful filling.
